Schneeballen

A while ago we took a short trip down the Romantic Road in Bavaria. Along the way, we stopped at a little medieval town called Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I use the term “medieval” very loosely seeing as the town has probably been restored over and over again and all the medieval bits don’t really look that medieval anymore.

Anyway, the local speciality in Rotheburg was a sweet little big schneeball (snowball) covered with anything from cinnamon and sugar to chocolate and grated coconut.

These little schneeballen are actually strips of dough all glued together in the shape of a ball, and then fried! Wish I had known that they were fried before I gobbled down 2 of those things!

While it looks like you could take a big bite into a scheeball, it’s actually quite hard. It was easier to break the ball up into little bits before eating it. The schneeball actually tastes like bits of shortbread or biscuits (the English kind). Very moreish…though I felt a little sick after greedily wolfing down the 2 ballen!

I haven’t tried to make them myself (I don’t think I could ever look at them again!) but here’s a link that shows you how.

Freaky looking things aren’t they?

  6. I'm totally drooling! Thank you for not posting a recipe - then I'd have to make them and my whole family would swell up like lardballen!

  7. Yup, like alien brains freshly harvested, Wok&Spoon.
I tried one once last year while in the same lil' town and my Deutscher hub and I weren't impressed -- too hard for my liking. Some have fillings in them too?
I loved looking at their infinite varieties in shop windows though. :)

  9. The schneeball with cinnamon/sugar looks more freaking! But with fried dough, I bet both the cinnamon/sugar and chocolate taste "sinful". I wish it were softer.

  11. Retno: Yep – the balls are really really sweet! You need a good strong cup of tea or coffee to go with them!

Everything4Sweets: The trip was great…too bad the food wasn’t!

LittleCornerOfMine: The chocolate makes a difference!

Hi Kenny: 5 ballen!! I was feeling a bit sick after 2 ;-)

Lynn: I linked the recipe in my post if you’d like to make them! They’re deep fried!

Argus: Hm…yes, Brains! That’s what they look like! I wasn’t too big on the ones with fillings either! But they look so “inviting”.

LyricalLemongrass: Are there any German bakeries in MY? Maybe you might find them there.

Tigerfish: yeah, I nearly broke me teeth on the first bite before realizing that it was just easier to break it up before eating!

    MeltingWok: Hm…exotic isn’t the word I’d use…I’d probably say…ugly!
No, not packing yet. We’re actually leaving for Melbourne at the start of August. We’ll only spend 3 days in MY at the end of August on the way back  Very short time only. What about yourself?

  18. They look so innocent...but fried! It sounds very interesting. I would try it even if it's fried because I know I won't make it myself.

  19. Hi Nora: Yep, they were fried but didn't feel oily at all! I'm not a big fan of deep-frying even though I love deep-fried foods. The problem is it ends up stinking out the whole apartment for days!

  20. These look delicious!
Fried balls of dough are already delicious on their own, but covered with cinnamon and chocolate they're much better! :)

  25. I hope you enyoied your trip. I also hope you did not eat one of these funny looking chocloate covred monsters in rothenburg itself, because they are definitely not the best ones you will get. In franconia they are a speciality and really delicious, but those sold in the town itself are...horrible. Normally they are made for special events and not, never, anyhow covered in chocolate or something else than sugar and perhaps cinnamon.

  28. I love schneeballen! I went to Rothenburg in 2002, and loved them so much that my father brought them back for me when he returned to Germany in 2004, 2006, 2008, and this past spring. I love them so much, he even bought me a schneeball maker from one of the bakeries!

  30. I was in Rothenburg in March '11 and ate 2. DELICIOUS. One covered in chocolate and one covered in nougat. Wish I could have eaten more. Now I'll try to make them at home. What wonderful memories.

  31. Oh, this brings back great memories of visits to Rothenburg. I loved the hazelnut and chocolate schneeballen there. We always got the smaller sizes, and 2 of those were plenty. I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was in the main courtyard area near the courthouse, but they had good food. German and Bavarian food is often an acquired taste. I grew up with a family friend who was of German heritage, and she cooked traditional German food for us a lot. I miss that.
